Goya (ゴヤ)

Known in English as bitter gourd and ampalaya in Filipino, and goya in Japanese. Last week, I cooked one of my favorite dishes and it was sauteed ampalaya with scrambled eggs. This dish known to the Japanese which origins are from the island province of Okinawa, has long been a staple Filipino dish. Philippines as a tropical island, bitter gourds are plenty, abundant all over the year, and very affordable. Ampalaya is very rich in Vitamin B as its taste is very bitter. I am glad that this vegetable is now affordable in Japan pegged at 170 yen per piece (17USD). Spring really brings in more familiar tropical vegetables and a good source of vitamins.

I like that dish really too. :-)

I guess Goya (ゴーヤ)is its name originally in Okinawan dialect (or language) although it's very popular even outside of Okinawa. Nigauri (にがうり、苦瓜) was much popular at least east regions in Japan.
